What to do about that dry, itchy winter skin?

Depending on where you live, you may already be experiencing how the dry air inside and outside can wreak havoc on your skin. It’s only November and yet I find my lips are often dry along with my hands and the rest of my body. And, it’s not just me! I see dry, chapped lips starting to annoy my kids, most likely from standing at the bus stop on windy mornings and soccer practice in the evenings. The dry air in our house from the heater is causing itchiness, too. So what is the best way to combat dry, uncomfortable skin? Below are my top 10 tips to help you and your kids survive this winter without all the scratching.

Top 10 Tips for Better Winter Skin

  1. Turn on the humidifier and add some moisture back into the air

  2. Resist the urge to take super hot showers. Although they feel good in the moment, hot water can dry and irritate your skin.

  3. Polish away your dry skin with gentle body scrubs. Avoid scrubs that use ground up fruit pits and seeds to exfoliate, they are too harsh on the skin.

  4. Use lotion when you get out of the shower to seal in moisture

  5. Use lip balm day and night to reduce the chance of chapping

  6. Wear gloves when you go outside to protect your hands from the wind

  7. Use a cream or balm on your hands at night to help them recover while you sleep

  8. Use moisturizer on your face twice a day to avoid dryness

  9. Use sunscreen every morning because the sun is just as damaging to your face in the winter.

  10. Drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated.
